History

It was built in the late eighteen hundreds and is set in approximately 30 acres of parkland wood and arable land. The building itself has over 30 rooms including 5 dormitories, a dining room, kitchen and three lounges.

Mr Norman Paynter, a local Christian, who felt strongly that God had a purpose for its use, purchased the building and land in January 1991. At that time he was unaware of God's exact plan for Ballyards.

It wasn't until 1993 that God's purpose began to be revealed when Tom Eakins, of the Stauros Foundation, met with Norman and his wife Iris to discuss the Stauros vision of a residential unit for people suffering from addiction. After much prayer, both parties concluded that Ballyards was to become the Foundation's residential and discipling centre.

Prior to Norman Paynter purchasing Ballyards, the Hospital Authority had owned it and used it as a special care unit. To operate as a residential unit many changes had to be made.

In 1994 Charles and Anne Uprichard began both the ministry and renovation work needed in the facility. In 2000 Albert McDonald took over management of the facility from Arthur and Beth Williams. With great zeal and commitment Albert continued what Charles had begun. The most recent addition was the construction of a large multipurpose hall used for meetings, sports and other activities. It is interesting and exciting to note that Albert McDonald was the first resident in Ballyards.

Roy Brown, a former resident and husband of Pamela Brown, currently manages Ballyards.
